Building from HKW’s campus Master Plan for North Side Community School, two projects were completed in 2020 as the first pieces of its implementation, the Cafeteria Addition and a new Classroom Building. The cafeteria addition and minor existing kitchen re-planning were added to the current cafeteria building to allow more table space and better serving efficiency. The addition also is designed as an ICC500-compliant storm shelter, the first storm shelter for a public school designed within the city of St. Louis. HKW planned the addition to be seamless in its relation to the other campus buildings and be undetectable as a storm shelter through the use of impact-rated curtain wall.
