This project brought much needed functional renovations to an 1892 Theodore Link church. Originally located downtown, Frederick Bonsack authored the relocation of the building to its current Skinker & Waterman location in 1913. Modifications to the church over time have resulted in significant losses of functionality. HKW performed extensive user focus groups and observations, which proved to illustrate that the church was significantly under-utilized. Rather than focusing on an addition (which was the client’s initial assumed need), HKW found a reductive solution to better capture existing spaces for key congregational functions.
